Atheist Sam Harris’ Wheelbarrow
Recently I came across a comment from the atheist popularizer, Sam Harris, deriding Christians for believing accounts of Christ that come from a millennia-years old book penned by people for whom the wheelbarrow was emergent technology. I understand that for … Continue reading

Aslan’s Jesus: Dressing Up Fiction as Fact
I apologize for the apparent deceit. This post has nothing to do with the amazing allegories found in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. Those stories, which feature a Jesus-character who has taken on the shape of a mighty, good-but-not-safe lion … Continue reading
Questions, Concerns and Snide Remarks… and Christianity.
This space is devoted to you, the reader, so that you might ask a question, share a concern or yes, make a snide remark about the Bible, Christian theology and Christians too. Normally I like happy and easy comments (don’t … Continue reading

Annoyance with “God did it.”
The topics of evolution and the Big Bang came up in a recent conversation with one of my Christian family members, and I very briefly stated why I felt that the so-called “young earth” interpretation of Genesis’ early chapters was … Continue reading

You’re Only a Christian Because… (Born This Way)
The Charge You’re Only a Christian (and have a Christian perspective) because you happened to be Born in a Christian Family. Apparently who God “saves” is merely a feature of geography and culture? How convenient. The Culture Provocative comments like … Continue reading
The Weakness of “Weak” Atheism: Why Faith is Unavoidable Even for Those Who Try (and a debate with Danny Ledonne)
Is atheism characterized by faith in the absence of God or by the absence of faith in God? Regardless of which option is selected, it seems that faith is requisite in something (or someone), and that no faith-free option even exists. I choose faith in Jesus, but I understand that others don’t. What follows is a reflection about the faith atheists necessarily include in their worldview, often without their even knowing it. Comparing Santa Claus with Jesus (& other Reasons not to Believe…)
… in Santa. It is almost inevitable during the holiday season that someone will draw a parallel between Santa Claus and Jesus, oftentimes with the barb that both figures are “myths” or that “only children believe in Santa” etc. Ho, … Continue reading

Creation, Evolution… and My Brother.
I don’t know the particulars of how intelligent life came to be or on what precise timeline it developed, but as a Christian I’m left with the two sources of story that God has left at our disposal: the Bible and the universe … Continue reading

The Search for the Historical Adam (Oh yeah, and Eve too)!
In the most recent issue of Christianity Today (June 2011), the magazine’s cover and feature article sports a rendition of Genesis’ Adam as a Cro-Magnon man (and if you think that’s scary, you should see Eve). The article’s title reads “The Search for the Historical Adam,” and its subtitle promises readers a generalized “state of the debate” in light of ongoing genetic research into the human genome and its unmistakeable parallels and connectivity with less advanced creatures (think of mice and apes -not men-). This is certainly a hot topic for some Evangelical circles, especially those of more conservative spheres, and while Christianity Today serves up its usual, surface-level approach to far weightier issues, its editors do a sloppy job of keeping the lid on their own biases in the debate. What I mean is that they do not merely offer their readers a dispassionate “state of the debate,” but rather take sides and let a skewed perspective have the last word. <a href="”> Read More… Continue reading
